BHI 5 ON 5 TOURNAMENT RULES

  • The tournament is 5 on 5 (5 runners and a Goalie). Maximum roster size is 15 players & 2 Goalies.
  • The games are 3 ten-minute stop time periods.
  • Icing is the blue line and not the red line.
  • Floating Blue line: the blue time moves back to the red line once the offensive team is onside. Once the defensive team get the ball across the red line, the offensive team will have to leave the offensive zone.
  • No changing on icings.
  • All players under the age of 18 needs to wear a helmet with a full-face shield, elbow pads, hockey shin pads, hockey gloves, jock and a stick.
  • Players over the age of 18 are required to wear ice hockey, ball hockey or lacrosse gloves.
  • A player will be removed from the game if he or she has received 3 penalties in one game.
  • Mercy rule – The clock will run if there is 10 or more goals difference at any point during the game or if there is more than 5 goal difference with 5 minutes remaining in the third period. The losing team must get back within 3 goals for the clock to stop again.
  • Zero body checking is permitted.
  • Automatic ejection from the tournament for fighting.
  • The referee shall assess a Minor or Major penalty only, for any high stick infraction, as warranted on the play. 2 minutes (No Blood), 4 minute (Accidental with Blood), 5 minute (Intent with blood)
  • Every player on your roster has to play at least 1 round robin game to be eligible for elimination games.
  • Waving at a ball with a high stick (Contact or no Contact) is no longer a two minute penalty. Play will be stopped if a player contacts the ball with a high stick with possession from the offending team or player.
  • Delay of game with 2 minutes or less left in the game is a penalty shot
  • Sliding on one knee or two knees is now permitted however a minor penalty will be assessed if the following:
  1. any player who deliberately slides and makes contact with an opponent that impedes that players movement.
  2. in the event that a player has to take extreme measures to avoid being upset by an opponent that is  sliding        
  3. in the Co-ed, ladies, and youth leagues, a minor penalty shall be assessed to any player who  deliberately slides anywhere on the playing surface.
  4. A major penalty and game misconduct shall be assessed to any player who injures an opponent as a result of a deliberate slide.
  • Any player that plays in two division in the same tournament will be rated at the higher division
  • A player can not play in the Rec & the Shack division in the same tournament even if they aren`t rated. If they are playing on a Rec team, they can only play in the Rec & Barn division. (will count as a Rec rated player)
  • A player can not play in the Intermediate & the Barn division in the same tournament even if they aren’t rated. If they are playing on an intermediate team, they can only play in the Intermediate & Rec division. (will count as a Intermediate rated player)
  • A player can play in the Barn & Shack division during the same tournament. (will count as a Barn rated player)
  • No time outs during round robin play, 1 timeout per team will be allowed in each elimination game.
  • Round robins games  (no overtime, remains a tie)
  • Any team that forfeits a game will be assessed a 2 minute penalty in their next game of the tournament. (Round Robin or Playoffs)
  • A tie in quarter finals and semifinals will result in 5 minute overtime and then 3 man shootout. 
  • In a shootout, you must go through your entire roster before the same person can shoot twice.
  • Championship games will be continuous overtime.
  • Prizes will only be awarded to players who have participated in a tournament game including the second goalie 
  • NEW unsportsmanlike rule (any verbal taunts, insults or intimidation based on discriminatory grounds based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and physical disability) will result in a 1 game suspension

       Tie breakers with two teams      

  1. The team with the most wins
  2. Head to Head record
  3. The team with the least “goals against”
  4. The goal differential between the tied team
  5. Team with lease amount of penalties
  6. Coin toss
